August 9, 1931— March 6, 2026
Jacksonville, FL
Gus Willie Johnson, affectionately known as Sleepy, Uncle G, and Mr. J, was born on August 9, 1931, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Rufus and Fannie Mae Johnson. The second oldest of seven children, he passed away after a long and full life.
A dedicated and tireless worker, Gus was employed for many years with the ILA. He continued working past his 80th birthday before retiring and embracing retirement with great enthusiasm. He particularly enjoyed traveling to Hard Rock in Tampa and was always ready for the next adventure.
Above all, Gus cherished his family. He is survived by his wife of many years, Vernell Johnson; his son, Wayne Dawsey; stepchildren Rubin Williams, Kay Cardona, and Kimberly Johnston; his sisters Shirley Jefferson, Gloria Johnson, Rosalind Mcfay, and Betty Spencer; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He loved his family deeply and gave of himself without hesitation.
Preceding him in death were his brothers Herbert Johnson and Rufus (Teddy) Johnson. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the hospice team at St. Vincent’s and UF Oncology for their compassionate care.
