Gregory Dwight Marquardt
July 19, 1957— March 8, 2026
New Carrollton, MD
Gregory Dwight Marquardt, known to all as Greg, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at the age of 68 following a lengthy battle with early onset dementia. Born on July 19, 1957, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to the late Dr. Warren and Alice Marquardt, he grew up immersed in outdoor sports, particularly ice hockey. In 1969, his family moved to New Carrollton, Maryland, where Greg became deeply connected to University of Maryland Terrapin life and the New Carrollton Boys Club. It was there that he formed many lifelong friendships that remained steadfast throughout his life.
A gifted athlete, Greg excelled in multiple sports and stood out as a standout football player at Parkdale High School in Riverdale, Maryland. At 6'4", he was a formidable defensive lineman whose leadership and skill helped lead the team to its first Maryland state championship in 1975. That year, he earned selections to the MD All-County, MD All-State, and MD/DC/VA All-Metropolitan teams and was recognized as one of the finest defensive linemen in Panther history. His love for football continued for decades as he and his close friends became fixtures at Maryland Terrapin tailgates and games. He was also a devoted NFL fan and lifelong supporter of the Washington Redskins.
Greg earned a BS in Business Management from the University of Maryland, University College. He channeled the leadership he developed on the field into a successful career in office furniture sales, serving as District Manager for Desks and Furnishings in Washington, DC, and later as principal owner of Alliance Office Furniture in Springfield, Virginia. Yet what brought him the greatest joy were his relationships with family, friends, and his beloved dogs, Toby and Spuds. Greg had a remarkable ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. He was known for his gift of gab, his humor, and his love of golf, cookouts, the beach, yard work, horseshoes, cornhole, and the music of the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
He is survived by his children, Ashley (Jake) Wikman and Lindsey (Zach) Young; his siblings, Sheila (John) Taylor, Cheryl (Glen) Huston, and Steve (Christine) Marquardt; his grandchild; 11 nieces and nephews; several favorite aunts and uncles; many loving cousins; and a wide circle of cherished friends. Greg’s warmth, kindness, and zest for life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
