Gregory Allen Winfree

Gregory Allen Winfree passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Bossier City, Louisiana, at the age of 76.

Born on February 13, 1950, in Whitakers, North Carolina, to Matthew Franklin and Ruth Ann Proctor Winfree, Greg graduated from Northern Nash High School in Rocky Mount. He joined the United States Air Force on December 31, 1968, and served with distinction until his retirement as a Captain on January 31, 1993. While in the Air Force, he earned a B.S. in Industrial Technology and later pursued a master’s degree. In the years that followed, he worked in several roles, including managing contracts at Goodwill and Citizens Bank, at a welfare office, and as an insurance adjustor for Shelter Insurance. For ten years, he served as a school bus driver for Bossier Parish alongside his wife.

On March 17, 1973, Greg married Mavis Deloris Heathcock of Lambrook, Arkansas. Their 52-year marriage was blessed with one son, Spencer Dean Winfree. Greg was a devoted caretaker of both his home and family. He took great pride in his yard, tending to the lawn, flower beds, and shrubs he had planted over the years. Mechanically inclined, he was always repairing something around the house. He cherished the simple tradition of going to the movies and lunch every Saturday with his wife and son, a practice they maintained for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Mavis Winfree; son, Spencer Dean; sisters, Florence Gupton and Linda Boseman (Rusty); brother, Daniel Edward; and sister-in-law, Judy Winfree. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Jean Carrico (Thomas); and four brothers, Tommy Farr, Raymond Keith, James Alton (Janey), and William Robert.
