Grecia Damaso

Grecia Dámaso, 86, of Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born on January 2, 1940, in El Seibo, Dominican Republic, Grecia was the daughter of the late Modesto Dámaso and María Vitalina de la Cruz. One of eight children, she dedicated herself to hairdressing from a young age and became a prominent figure in the Dominican Republic’s hairstyling culture, owning several important salons. She emigrated to the United States in the 1970s, later becoming a citizen, and worked as an operator for various companies including American Plating and Swarovski. Even after retirement, she continued to style hair with the same passion.

Grecia was a force of nature, defined by her unwavering tenacity and a heart devoted entirely to her friends and family. As a single mother of three sons, she was a fierce advocate for her children, facing every obstacle and making every sacrifice for their well-being. She cherished time spent with friends, loved to travel, and found her greatest joy in the company of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Mark, Igor, and Joel, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Amado de la Cruz and Héctor de la Cruz, and her sister Teresa de la Cruz. She now joins in heaven her beloved mother María (Nini) Vitalina de la Cruz, her sister Mercedes (Chea) Dámaso, and her brothers Livio Antonio (Toño) de la Cruz, Alfredo de la Cruz, and Modesto (Meco) de la Cruz. Grecia will be remembered for her unconditional love for her family, her loyalty to her friends, her lifelong passion for hairdressing, and above all, her deep faith in Christ.
