July 10, 1957— March 11, 2026
Sykesville, MD
Gordon Linton Daugherty, age 68, of Sykesville, Maryland, passed away on March 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 10, 1957, and raised in the Columbia, Maryland area, Gordon possessed extraordinary artistic talent, boundless curiosity, and a deep warmth that touched everyone who knew him.
Predeceased by his mother, Mary C. Daugherty, his father, Gordon H. Daugherty, and his beloved sister, M. Carmel (Candy) Daugherty, Gordon’s gifts were evident from an early age. He studied fine art at the Pratt Institute in New York City from 1976 to 1979, and continued his training at the Maryland Institute College of Art from 1980 to 1982, as well as at the Corcoran School of Art and the Washington Studio School in Washington, D.C. He also explored photography, graphic design, art restoration, and illustration. His paintings and murals found homes in private collections and public spaces across the country, including numerous parish churches and chapels.
A self-employed artist who worked from his studio on a farm in Sykesville, Gordon created in oils, watercolors, and many other mediums. His commissions ranged from intimate portraits and sweeping landscapes to grand murals and elegant faux finishes. He lived and worked in Arlington, Virginia; San Diego, California; and New Mexico before settling in Sykesville, where he thrived in his farmhouse studio. Surrounded by green pastures, grazing horses, and visiting deer, he filled his days with music and art. Gordon held a profound love for animals and found beauty in the simplest elements of the natural world.
He is survived by a wide circle of devoted friends who became his chosen family, and by his beloved dog, Joey. Gordon was known for his inspiring artistry, sharp wit, generous spirit, and infectious enthusiasm for life, literature, film, music, and even the simple pleasure of ice cream. His legacy endures in the many works of beauty he left behind.
