Gilbert Nathaniel Scott, age 84, of Louisa, Virginia, passed away on March 12, 2026. Born in Louisa on June 29, 1941, he was the beloved husband of 65 years to Barbara Scott and a devoted father to Jeffery Scott (Pamela Wuichet), David Scott (Nicole Brooks Scott), Terry Scott (Sandra Shelton Scott), Kim Scott Barnett (Ronnie Washington), and Michael Scott. He was a proud grandfather to Nathaniel Scott, Brandan Scott, Shamay Bright, Bryant Barnett, Lauren Friend, Shelton Fields, and Kristin Wuichet, and a loving great-grandfather to Mila Scott, Ava Scott, Noah Scott, Shamar Turner, Ariella Friend, Alani Orange, and King Bright.

Gilbert is survived by his brothers, Millard Scott (Isabel) and James (June) Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lettie Scott, his sisters Rosa Harris, Linda Russell, Ann Jackson, Delaphine Grooms, and Teresa Taylor, and his brothers Oscar Scott and Alfonza Scott.

Beyond his family, Gilbert was a man of many talents and roles over his lifetime—entrepreneur, logger, truck driver, mechanic, and race car driver, and many passions. He was a dog lover throughout his life and known in the community as a dog whisperer. He could often be observed having a full conversation with one of his prized dogs.

He also had a natural attraction to music, which he expressed through singing in the men’s chorus at Galilee Baptist Church and learning how to play the bass guitar as an adult under the tutelage of friends Steve Bradshaw, Melvin Timberlake and Willie Brice. These activities reflected his natural curiosity, boundless energy and constant learning.

Perhaps Gilbert’s greatest interest was cars. Mechanically inclined from a very early age, he had a passion for racing, building his first formal race car in the 1960s with a 1954 Ford. He perfected every detail of his race cars, which were famously fast. Over the years he became well known throughout the racing community, competing primarily at Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro and Sumerduck Dragway in Sumerduck, Virginia. One of his most memorable victories came when he drove his 1968 Ford Mustang GT, known as “Wild Breed,” to a first-place finish under heavy competition at Eastside Speedway.

He was a Ford man through and through. In his last days, when he could not speak, he waved off one of his great-grandsons who mentioned the possible purchase of a Chevy – a sign of the wry sense of humor Gilbert displayed with family and friends.

Through his final lap has been run, the legacy of Gilbert Nathaniel Scott will forever roar in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A funeral service honoring Gilbert’s life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Galilee Baptist Church, 3598 Three Notch Road, Louisa, Virginia.
