September 23, 1929— March 8, 2026
Pittsburgh, PA
Gertrude Agnes Kernan, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on September 23, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she spent her entire life in the area, creating a warm and loving home for her eleven children and their families.
A devoted homemaker, Gertrude found deep joy in gardening, tending flowers and vegetables with care. Her children recalled walks through the yard to admire blooming plants, summer salads made with fresh garden produce, and windowsills filled with thriving houseplants. She was equally passionate about creative pursuits, coloring, painting by numbers, and crafting. She made plastic canvas dollhouse furniture, recipe boxes, and a variety of Christmas ornaments that still adorn family trees each year. With skill learned as a young girl sewing alongside her sister Jenny, she created clothes for her children, homemade seersucker pajamas, dresses for her daughters’ dolls, and even tiny outfits for troll dolls. Many of her children and grandchildren still cherish the crocheted afghans she made for new babies.
Gertrude loved to read, whether gardening books, craft magazines, medical texts, or cookbooks, always seeking to learn and improve. She prepared dinner each night for her large family and, though she doubted her own cooking ability, took special pleasure in baking. Each Christmas she taught her daughters to make dozens of cookies, a tradition that often lasted through New Year’s. The family also gathered to work on jigsaw puzzles while staying up to welcome the new year. Her strong faith sustained her throughout life. She maintained a cherished collection of angels that reflected her nurturing spirit and belief in God’s love. Near the end, even while hospitalized, she remained surprisingly humorous and cooperative, expressing readiness to go when God called her and repeatedly asking to go “home.”
Gertrude is survived by her children, Sandra, Linda (David) Stadelman, Deborah (Niles) Blough, John, Peggy, Nancy (Patrick) Thornton, Thomas (Christine Schoeb), Timothy, Mary, David, and Donald Kernan, along with countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward the values of kindness, compassion, faith, and resilience she instilled in them. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Kernan; her parents, Frank and Josepha Goldbronn; and her six siblings, Ella, Robert, Edward, George, Arthur, and Genevieve.
