Gertie Wiggins Corey

Mrs. Gertie Wiggins Corey, 91, of Vanceboro, North Carolina, passed away on March 10, 2026, at her residence. The day marked what would have been her 76th wedding anniversary.

Born on September 6, 1934, in Beaufort County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Fronnie Haddock Wiggins. A graduate of Greenville Beauty School, Gertie worked as a hairstylist for more than 15 years. She and her husband first made their home in Chocowinity before settling in Vanceboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Ernest McRoy “Chick” Corey, in 2020, and her brothers, Ervin Wiggins, Bobby Gene Wiggins, and Rayvon Wiggins.

She is survived by her daughters, Lila Corey (Marc Blackman) and Vicky Corey, both of Youngsville, North Carolina; grandchildren Corey Waters (Ray Wilson), Kent Waters, Teddy Clemons (Amanda), Preston Clemons, and Brooks Clemons (Jessica); great-grandchildren Vanessa Wilson, Trystan Clemons, Marlow Clemons, and Pressley Clemons; and sisters Ida Gaskins, Neva Worthington, and Hilda Boyd.
