Gerald Gene Michael Schmerber
January 28, 1938— March 8, 2026
San Antonio, TX
Gerald Gene Michael Schmerber, known to all as Gerry, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at Texsan Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 88. Born on January 28, 1938, in Galveston, Texas, to Auggie Michael and Irene Beckwith Moore, she grew up embracing the cowgirl life, riding horses in Carrizo Springs before attending Tivy High School in Kerrville, where she graduated in 1956. There she formed lifelong friendships, particularly enjoying horseback rides with her dear friend Carol.
In 1959, Gerry married her high school sweetheart, Joe Schmerber, a Tivy football player whose sport remained close to her heart throughout her life. Together they raised three children: Steve Schmerber of San Antonio, Scotty Schmerber of Kerrville, and Robin Schmerber of San Antonio. Gerry worked with dedication as a medical transcriptionist at Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital. A lifelong faithful parishioner, she worshiped at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin and later at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Antonio.
Gerry found deep joy in her family, especially her seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She lovingly handcrafted a Christmas stocking and blanket for each one shortly after their birth, creating a cherished family tradition. She faithfully attended their sporting events, stage productions, recitals, and graduations, and shared special travels with her daughter to crafting events, flower shows, and antique fairs. Each spring, they enjoyed weekend drives through the Hill Country to admire the wildflowers and bluebonnets, with Willow Loop a favorite destination. She also treasured her memories of a memorable trip to Scotland. An avid football fan, she proudly followed her son Scotty, grandson Brett, and grandsons Michael, Matthew, and David through their Tivy Antlers and other football careers. Her love of horses, the rodeo, and particularly bull-riding remained strong throughout her life, as did her passion for her plants and flowers, her craft projects, and creating a warm, country-inspired home.
Gerry will be remembered for her determination, strength, adventurous spirit, and the profound care she poured into everything she did for her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her aunts. She is survived by her husband Joe Schmerber; her sons Steve Schmerber and wife Janet, and Scotty Schmerber and wife Marion; her daughter Robin Schmerber; her grandchildren Stephanie Neunuebel and husband Ryan, Michael Schmerber, MD, Jennifer Davila, PhD and husband Jesse, Matthew Schmerber and wife Kyle, David Schmerber and wife Catalina, Alex Schmerber and girlfriend Macey, and Lt. Colonel Brett Schmerber and wife Karissa; and her great-grandchildren Bethany, Luke, Jack, Caeli, and Theo Neunuebel, Josephine and Juliette Davila, Liam, Tyson, Micah, Rocco, Seton Rose, Seraphina, Riley, and Emmaleigh Schmerber.
