George William Horan

George William Horan, affectionately known as “Pickles,” passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on March 8, 1938, in Kearny, New Jersey, he was the son of Mathew Horan and Edna Moyle. George proudly served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 before beginning a 25-year career as a firefighter with the Kearny Fire Department. After retiring, he moved to Spring Lake, New Jersey, where he owned and operated the Hustle Bustle Laundromat. In 1988, George settled in the Vero Beach/Fort Pierce area of Florida, where he owned and operated Pickles NY Deli for ten years and later worked at Dodgertown. He was well known for preparing corned beef dinners for the Elks and Moose Clubs in Vero Beach, where he was a proud member of both organizations.
George was deeply loved by everyone fortunate enough to know him. He shared 65 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Joyce (Austin) Horan. He is survived by his daughter, Gayle Walsh; sons-in-law Douglas Walsh and Michael Dobranchin; grandchildren Kevin Wood, Christian Wood, Allyson Walsh Halligan (Michael), Julianne Walsh (Matt), and James Walsh; great-granddaughters Sydney Grace and Teagan Leigh Halligan; brother-in-law Ken Austin (Gen); and sister-in-law Susanne Austin. He was predeceased by his daughters Leigh Horan Wood and Cathleen Horan Dobranchin, his brother Matthew Horan, sister-in-law Helen Horan, and brother-in-law Robert Austin.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate team at Treasure Coast Hospice in Fort Pierce for their care during his final days. George lived a happy and fulfilling life filled with cherished memories, adventures, trips, and laughter shared with family and friends.
