George R. Bachman, 86, of Elkhart, passed away Friday February 27, 2026 at Esther's House-Center for Hospice, Elkhart. He was born June 4, 1939 in Peru, IN to Maurice and Violet Bachman. On December 26, 1959, he married Carol Perdiue who preceded him in death on July 29, 2023 after 63 years of marriage.
George spent his life in the retail food industry, first with Kroger, then his own store Bachman's Market, then Maurek's IGA and finally with The Landing in Shipshewana, IN that he owned with his wife Carol. He was a County Councilman and County Commissioner in LaGrange County, IN. He was also on the Council for Aging in LaGrange County. He and Carol were very active in the Miss Elkhart County pageant. He enjoyed cycling.
Surviving are his daughter, Jama Vassar of Elkhart, son Jeremy (Deb) Bachman of Mesa, AZ, grandchildren, Jarrod (Jen) Luttrell and Drew Bachman, great-grandchildren, Aurora, Scarlet and Anthony Luttrell, Gage Davis, and William Mickelson. He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice Bachman and Violet Opp, his wife Carol, grandson Kyle Luttrell, son-in-law Paul Vassar and a brother, Richard "Dick" Bachman.
Visitation for George will be from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514. Funeral services will be at 3pm on Saturday March 7, 2026 at Eden Worship Center, 4095 South 900 West, Topeka, IN 46571 with Pastors Kurt Nichols and Harold Gingerich officiating.
