George Marshall “Hopper” Ramsey, age 79, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away on March 10, 2026, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Born on June 26, 1946, in Oxford, Mississippi, to Carl Elton and Gladys Ann (Johnson) Ramsey, he graduated from Oxford High School in 1964. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, trained in vehicle maintenance and mechanics, and served four years in Germany, attaining the rank of Specialist E-5.
After his military service, George worked for more than twenty years as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service in Dallas, Texas. There he met and married Mary Joann Ainsworth on January 22, 1976; she preceded him in death on July 12, 2021. Deeply committed to the Masonic Fraternal Family, he was initiated into Washington Lodge 1117 A.F. & A.M. in Dallas, advanced to Master Mason, and attained the 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite. He was a proud member of the Hella Temple of Shriners and served as Worthy Patron of Loyal Chapter #648 Order of the Eastern Star. After Mary’s passing and despite his own health challenges, George continued his service in Missouri, where he was installed as Worthy Grand Patron of the Missouri Order of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his three sons, Terry Ramsey of Estero, Florida, Larry Ramsey of Lancaster, Texas, and Marty Ramsey of Randolph, Mississippi; three sisters, Ella May Daniels, Lynda “Sis” Jackson and her husband Bob, and Peggy Haynie and her husband Wayne, all of Oxford, Mississippi; one brother, Dean Ramsey and his wife Myrna of Tucson, Arizona; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, and seven siblings.
