Swampscott, MA
George H. F. Croteau, 74, of Swampscott, died on March 13, 2026, at the Kaplan Hospice House, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Lynn on June 21, 1951, to the late George F. and Helen M. (Walsh) Croteau, George was a multi-talented artist whose creative spirit touched everyone around him. He was admired for his exceptional painting and wallpaper skills, and as a gifted drummer he served as the driving heartbeat of every band he played in. Each year he delighted family and friends with his elaborate electrified Christmas and Halloween villages, transforming the home he shared with Natalie into a festive wonderland both inside and out.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, George served the Salem Fire Department for more than thirty years. He was well known in the firefighting community for his meticulous restoration of firefighters’ helmets. An avid train enthusiast, he took great pleasure in painting model trains and creating an intricate N-scale layout of Boston. For many years he attended train shows with his son Jeremy, who shared his passion. George loved grilling for friends and family at outdoor gatherings, and he possessed a remarkable gift for storytelling, delivered with quick, intelligent, and clever humor that drew people to him. His greatest joys came from time spent with his children and grandchildren, and in recent years he cherished the French chicken dish that Natalie prepared for him each week.
George leaves behind his wife of thirty years, Natalie Gould; his children, Jennifer Coolen (Dana), Heather Croteau Carver (John), Melissa Cannistraci (Pete), Michael Croteau (Molly), and Jeremy Croteau; his grandchildren, Hannah Ross, Scott and William Harney, Cassidy and Cooper Cannistraci, and Nicholas Croteau; his sisters, Denise Famico (Chet) and Jeanne Paolini (David); his nephews, Dominic Famico, Garrett and Grant Paolini; his cousins, Joe Croteau (Joanne), Dennis Croteau (Susan), and many others; and a wide circle of close friends who will remember him with great affection.
