George A Thelen, Sr

George A. Thelen Sr., age 86, of Gobles, passed away at home on February 15, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on March 17, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to Walter and Eleanor Thelen, he attended St. Rita of Cascia. On October 22, 1960, he married Betty, the love of his life, whom he had known since grammar school.

George served with pride for 32 years as a Chicago Fireman, working on Engine 29, Truck 52, and later as an Engineer at Engine 47. He was a brother of the Barrel and participated in the 1980 strike. After retiring in 1997, he and Betty spent many years traveling across North America. An avid golfer, he was happiest on the course. In the late 1970s, they purchased the Kozy Nest Resort in Grand Junction and operated it until 1987 before settling permanently in the Duck Lake area in 1995. George cherished his time on the lake, especially when his grandchildren came to visit, and above all, he treasured the joy his family brought him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, and his brothers, Walter (Moose) and Bobby.

George is survived by his children, George (Gina) Thelen Jr. of Chicago, Illinois, Laura Thelen of Woodridge, Illinois, and Anne (Gil) Garza of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; his grandchildren, Paige, Luke, Jill, Johnny, Jeffrey, Jacklyn, Emily, and Garrett; his great-granddaughters, Jesse and Georgie; and many dear friends.
