Gary Steven Martinez

Gary Steven Martinez, born on July 13, 1967, in Espanola, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, in Chimayo, New Mexico. A Journeyman Electrician at Los Alamos National Labs, he was often the first called upon for new projects and learning opportunities. Throughout his career he pursued certifications and earned an associate’s degree, embodying hard work and creativity.

Above all, Gary was a devoted father and grandfather. He took great pride in his children, Ashley Martinez, Stephen Martinez, and Nicole Martinez, supporting them in sports and every endeavor while nurturing strong family bonds. His grandchildren, Lilee Zarate and Estevan Martinez, were his world. He shared with them his love of hunting and fishing, created joyful memories outdoors with his father, brother, son, and nephew, and delighted in simple pleasures such as making red hot dogs and watching “The Incredibles” with Lilee. Known for his warm hugs, playful spirit, and unconditional love, Gary filled his family’s lives with laughter and adventure.

A lifelong Catholic, Gary was baptized, received his first holy communion, and was confirmed at Holy Family Parish in Chimayo. His faith shaped a life marked by kindness, compassion, and devotion. He found joy in deer and elk hunting, fishing, riding his side-by-side, watching football and boxing, and spending time with his Shih Tzu, Honey. He cherished his brother Glenn, his nephews Terry and Jayden, and the many family outings and quiet moments that strengthened those bonds. In his younger years he enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, and in later years he loved teaching and simply being present with those closest to him.

Gary is survived by his children, Ashley Martinez (Alejandro Romero), Stephen Martinez (Kelly Martinez), and Nicole Martinez (Melissa Martinez); the mother of his children, JoDee Martinez; his grandchildren, Lilee Zarate and Estevan Martinez; his father, Jose Filiberto Martinez; his brother, Glenn Martinez (Phyllis); nieces Celeste Salazar (Brandon), Janelle Martinez (Terry Martinez), and Michelle Montoya; cherished friend Melissa Austin; his Shih Tzu companion Honey; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces and nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Martinez; brother, Douglas Martinez; nephew, Julian Martinez; paternal grandparents, Refugio L. Martinez and Juan Pedro Martinez; and maternal grandparents Delfino Fernandez and Clorinda Fernandez.
