April 5, 1952 March 8, 2026

Grants, NM

Gary Slater, a dedicated and compassionate man known for his lifelong commitment to caregiving and community service, passed away on March 8, 2026, in Grants, New Mexico. Born on April 5, 1952, in Denver, Colorado, he spent his early years there before his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and later to Grants, where he completed high school. Grants and Las Cruces remained the places he proudly called home throughout his life.

Gary’s professional path reflected his strong work ethic and deep empathy. He began by working at the Home Stake and uranium mines before turning to roles that allowed him to care for others, serving as a caregiver with Bethagy Home Care and at Dona Ana Schools. His dedication to supporting people with disabilities became a central focus of both his career and his personal mission, touching countless lives through his kindness and steady presence.

Outside of work, Gary embraced life with quiet enthusiasm. He loved to cook and bake, took pleasure in playing board games and cards with family and friends, and enjoyed traveling and hiking in the outdoors. Those who knew him remembered his warm, gentle spirit and his calm, easygoing nature that made him a comforting and reliable companion in any circumstance.

He is survived by his children Tammy Slater, Dustin “Dusty” Slater, and Christopher Slater and his wife Michelle Slater; his sister Debra Knowles; his stepson Chris Stern; and his grandchildren Jessilyn Martinez, Triston Slater, Sam Slater, and Andrew Corona, along with his extended Trujillo family. His beloved dogs, Ebony and Buffy, were cherished members of his household. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Twila Slater; his brother David Slater; and his former wives Jane Slater and Elaine Trujillo.
