Gary Ray Coon was born on May 20, 1941, in Howard, Kansas, to Sands Archibald Coon and Dorothy June Coon. He passed away on March 6, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 84, surrounded by loved ones. A longtime resident of Waverly, Kansas, he later made his home in Emporia.
Gary worked for many years at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant, where he served as union president before retiring in 2002. He also gave his time in public service as a Deputy Sheriff with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. He had a deep love for the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, and embraced many adventures throughout his life. He taught martial arts, experienced the excitement of bronc riding, and cherished traveling with family and friends. Gary lived with enthusiasm and created many lasting memories with those who knew and loved him.
He married Arlene on June 28, 1985. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Gary A. Coon, Tony J. Anderson, and Tony L. Belt; one sister, Connie Beaston; one granddaughter, Nikki M. Belt; and one grandson, Jacob Coon.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Coon; his children, Danny R. Coon of Emporia, Julie Belt of Emporia, Julie Coon of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Todd and Angel Coon of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Jed and Jennifer Anderson of Burlington, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; as well as many great-grandchildren and numerous special friends. Gary was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
