March 3, 1954— March 11, 2026
Vinita, OK
Gary Mills, beloved father, grandfather, veteran, storyteller, and unapologetic flirt, passed away surrounded by love. Born in Syracuse and raised in the quiet beauty of Lake Placid, New York, Gary grew up with a spirit as bold as the mountains that shaped him. He joined the United States Army at a young age, embarking on a long career that took him to Germany, Alabama, and Kansas, where he served as both a drill sergeant and, in his own proud words, an “Army chef.”
Gary never met a stranger. He had a gift for striking up conversations anywhere, leaving behind new friends and often a few blushing faces. Known for his kindness, quick wit, and generous heart, he was the sort of man who would give you the shirt off his back, usually while cracking a joke about how good he looked without it. After retiring from the military, he channeled his love of cooking into the Shamrock Café and Diamond Rio, where his hamburgers became the stuff of local legend. He also owned and meticulously maintained a small trailer park. Around town, he was affectionately known as “that Yankee,” a title he wore with pride.
Gary held a deep interest in history, especially politics, and found joy in country music, dancing, and karaoke. He served for many years on the White Oak School Board, giving freely of his time and energy. His motto—“If they’re busy talking about me, they have less time to talk about someone else”—perfectly captured his unforgettable personality.
He is survived by his children, Kelly Dachenhausen and her husband Spike, and Ben Mills and his wife Mindy; his grandchildren, Austin Mills, Josh Stark, and Dane Dachenhausen; and his three brothers, Dennis, Billy, and Allen Mills. They will forever carry his stories, his humor, and his fierce love. Gary was a simple man at heart, content with a Pepsi, a cigarette, and a bowl of cereal, yet he also cherished good meals shared with fine company and the chance to charm those around him. He lived big, loved big, and gave big, leaving the world softer, kinder, and far funnier for having known him.
