Navarre, FL
Gary Lyle Cole, a devoted husband, proud veteran, and beloved educator, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the age of 77.
Born in Bath, New York, Gary showed remarkable resilience from an early age. As a child, he overcame the challenges of polio, a hardship that shaped the determination and quiet strength he carried throughout his life. Drafted during the Vietnam War, he completed three tours in Vietnam as part of a distinguished 30-year military career. Only recently was it discovered that he had been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor, an honor he never spoke of, choosing instead to carry his service with humility and quiet dignity.
After retiring from the military, Gary fulfilled his longtime dream of becoming a teacher. He spent 15 years as an English teacher, becoming beloved by students and colleagues alike. Known for his humor and encouragement, he inspired countless young people and left a lasting mark on those fortunate enough to sit in his classroom.
He shared 34 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Catherine Cole, building a life grounded in love, loyalty, and partnership. Together they enjoyed traveling and creating lasting memories, especially on the cruises that brought him great joy and adventure. Despite the many challenges he faced, Gary remained a man defined by resilience—serving his country with honor, guiding young minds, and cherishing the people closest to him.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Catherine Cole, his daughter Brandi Cole, grandson Alijah Lee, and sisters Marsa Kent and Victoria Dandrea, with whom he shared a special and cherished bond, along with extended family, friends, former students, and all whose lives he touched.
