Gary Gene Gates

Gary Gene Gates, 80, of Burns, Oregon, passed away on March 4, 2026. Born on June 22, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, to Wilker and Jean Gates, Gary spent most of his life in his home state. He built a life rooted in hard work, independence, and a deep commitment to family.

Gary served his country with pride as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he worked as an iron worker, a career that reflected his strength, resilience, and steady dedication. As a single father, he devoted himself to raising his children and remained a quiet yet constant presence in the lives of those around him. He found peace in the outdoors and gardening, enjoyed baking for family and friends, and though often solitary, he welcomed good conversation and thoughtful debate.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Wilker and Jean Gates, and his siblings Richard Gates, Bill Gates, Wilker “Beep” Gates, and Cindi Gates. He is survived by his siblings Velna Schilling, Tom Gates, John Gates, and Dan Gates; his children Dawn Gates and Teresa Smith; his grandchildren Tyler Rowley, Crystal Short, Tasha Huwe, Nathan Veltrie Jr., and Chase Bolin; and his great-grandchildren Avah and Rhonan Short, Emma and Ethan Rowley, and Raven Bolin.

Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, independent spirit, and the love he carried for his family.
