West Jordan, UT
Garth Stokes, age 85, of West Jordan, Utah, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026. Born on June 14, 1940, in Cleveland, Utah, to James and Zella Stokes, he grew up in Emery County and graduated from North Emery High School in 1958. An active athlete, he participated in basketball, baseball, and pole vaulting during his school years.
After moving to Salt Lake City, Garth built a long career as a meat cutter at Jordan Meat, where he became known for his strong work ethic. He later worked at Generator Exchange rebuilding starters before retiring. In 1961, he married his sweetheart, Donna Marshall Stokes. The couple raised four children together and shared 62 loving years of marriage until Donna’s passing in 2023.
Garth’s greatest passions were horses and the outdoors. He began riding as a boy and spent much of his life training and racing horses in both flat track and chariot events. He also enjoyed bowling for many years, forming lasting friendships in local leagues. An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished countless trips and memories made with family and friends in nature.
Garth is survived by his daughters, Tammy Johnson (Monte) and Tiffany Johnson; his son, Brandon Stokes and Mike Austin; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his son, Brett Stokes; his parents, James and Zella Stokes; his brothers, James, Donald, Ray, and Gary Stokes; and his sisters, Corinne Stokes, Helen Robbins, and Reva Gordon. He will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his deep love of horses and the outdoors, and the quiet joy he found in the company of those he loved.
