Garrett Matthew Connell

March 20, 1992 March 6, 2026

Georgetown, TX

Garrett Connell, adopted in 1992 by Larry and Susan Connell, was born to an unwed mother and baptized as an infant at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, Texas. From an early age, he displayed a wisdom and understanding beyond his years, along with a natural humility and a unique sense of God’s presence. His best friend Kel Gangi recalled that in fifth grade Garrett ran for class president with the slogan “Vote for Garrett, he’s a good friend,” a phrase that became his guiding motto throughout life. He was known for his fairness and his steadfast loyalty as a friend.

Garrett graduated from Georgetown High School in 2009 and attended Southwestern University. He found deep purpose and belonging as a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #520, where he formed lasting bonds of camaraderie and loyalty. His union friend Pat told Ashley that Garrett spoke of her constantly with pride and affection, referring to her as his best friend and “old lady,” and that everyone who knew him understood she was his person through and through.

Garrett’s instinctive love for children shone brightly as he grew older. Gentle and paternal by nature, he spoke the language of children with ease and became a devoted provider and protector, especially to Juni, whom he loved deeply. He cherished hopes of welcoming more children into his life. He and his father Larry shared a special tradition of celebrating their birthdays together each spring, often skiing in Colorado. His mother Susan remained his unwavering advocate, supporter, and friend throughout his life.

The great love of Garrett’s life was Ashley Carter, his longtime friend and partner. Together they enjoyed Renaissance Fairs, music festivals, and countless road trips across the country to visit family. He took genuine delight in taking Juni to gymnastics each week and to the zoo. Garrett and Ashley had built a home together on the farm in the country, and at the time of his passing he was eagerly looking forward to becoming Ashley’s husband and Juni’s father. He was at peace and full of promise for the future.

Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. We will miss your bright, smiling face and look forward to seeing you again in the mansions Jesus is preparing in His Father’s house.
