Rio Rancho, NM

Garold Leo Hohmann, known to all as Gary, was born on October 6, 1936, in Alva, Oklahoma, and passed away on March 8, 2026, in Rio Rancho at the age of 89. A devoted husband to Catherine Hohmann (née Moyer), he was a loving father to Timothy Hohmann, Christine Cavallo (Dave), Melissa Endlich (Gary), James Hohmann (JoAn), Todd Hohmann, Nancy Schindler (Nils), and Ellen Stevens. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Gary lived a life marked by hard work and dedication. After graduating from Loras Academy and the University of Iowa, he began his career in Dubuque, Iowa, and spent many years as an Electrical and Nuclear Engineer with Westinghouse. His professional path led him and his family across several states, including Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Maryland, Idaho, and South Carolina. His work centered on the environmental cleanup and management of nuclear waste materials. In retirement, he returned to New Mexico at the urging of his wife Cathy, who cherished the time they had spent in Los Alamos early in his career.

A devout Catholic and Third Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Gary lived his faith through service to the church and participation in charitable and community projects. He led numerous fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics and spearheaded a neighborhood initiative that created several miles of a natural walking path, which still bears his name and continues to be enjoyed by many. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting with his sons and camping with his family. He delighted in gathering everyone around the campfire to play guitar, sing, and tell the story of “Herman,” moments that remain deeply etched in his children’s memories. Gary passed his wonderful sense of humor on to all of his children and kept them laughing until the very end.

He was preceded in death by his wife and eldest son. Those who knew and loved him will miss his steady presence, his kindness, and the warmth he brought to every gathering.
