Her family was the center of her life.Gail bravely fought breast cancer for over thirty years, never complaining that life was unfair. Her oncologists at Brigham and Woman's and Dana Faber Hospitals often expressed amazement and admiration for her pleasant, optimistic personality.Gail was the daughter of Agnes (née Heatherman) and Henry Swenson and grew up in the White Avenue neighborhood of Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Worcester City Hospital with her registered nursing degree, Gail first worked at Cape Cod Community Hospital. In 1969, she moved to San Francisco and joined the staff at Stanford University Teaching Hospital where she supported pioneering medical teams during a historic period in cardiac surgery.Gail missed New England and returned to Massachusetts after an unforgettable winding, cross-country drive with her friend Marianne in her new Pontiac Firebird. Soon after returning, she became head nurse at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester at just 23 years old-an early sign of the leadership, skill, and dedication that would define her career.During this time, Gail married Walter Bickford of Berlin. She soon stepped back from full-time nursing for several years to raise her children, Rachel, born in 1974, and Benjamin, born in 1978. She joined Planned Parenthood, where she worked for 25 years.
