COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Fred Breeding, a respected member of the Cookeville community and a dedicated family man, passed away on March 11, 2026, in Cookeville, Tennessee. Born on July 28, 1934, in Algood, Tennessee, Fred lived a life marked by service, skill, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved and the values he upheld.
A graduate of Central High School (Class of '55) in Cookeville, Fred pursued higher education at Tennessee Tech, where he attended for two years on a scholarship, focusing on electrical engineering. His natural aptitude and logical mind made him a "jack of all trades," a man who could repair nearly anything and who possessed a broad knowledge that many admired. Fred’s technical prowess was complemented by a warm, outgoing personality. He loved meeting new people and was a member of Paran Church, reflecting the depth of his faith and community spirit.
Fred retired after more than 26 years of dedicated service at Sears, where his work ethic and skill left a lasting impression. Beyond his professional achievements, he was also a proud charter member of the Middle Tennessee Tractor and Engine Club, an accomplishment that brought him great pride and satisfaction. His involvement in this club reflected his diverse interests and his love for mechanical and agricultural heritage.
One of Fred’s cherished hobbies was being a Ham Radio Operator, known by the call sign "WB4SUO," a hobby through which he connected with many and exercised his technical skills with passion and precision.
Fred’s family was the cornerstone of his life. He shared 65 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Betty Jean Hawkins Breeding of (Charter Assisted Living) Cookeville, whom he married in November 1960 at the old homeplace in Cookeville. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their mutual love and respect. They are survived by their son, Kevin Breeding of Robertson County, Tennessee, and their daughter, Katherine Swanson, along with her husband Dr. George Swanson of Knoxville, Tennessee. Fred took immense pride in his grandchildren, Emily and Audrey Swanson of Knoxville, who carry forward his legacy.
He is also remembered fondly by his brother-in-law, Wayland Hawkins and his wife Karen of Cookeville, Tennessee, and sister-in-law, Blanche Smithers of Cookeville, Tennessee.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Talmage and Willie Frances Warren Breeding; three brothers, Robert, James, and Roy Breeding; three sisters, Ruby Henderson, Virginia Judd, and Rosa Ledbetter; and brother-in-law Pharaoh Smithers.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 from the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper, Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with Pastors Rick and Donna Peak officiating.
Interment will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery with family and friends serving as Pallbearers.
