Franklin "Frank" Smith

Franklin "Frank" Smith

October 29, 1944 March 8, 2026

Osceola, IN

Franklin “Frank” D. Smith, 81, passed away on March 8, 2026.

Frank was born on October 29, 1944, in Mishawaka, to the late James and Virginia (Gerard) Smith, and grew up in Osceola, where he developed the strong work ethic and straightforward character that defined his life.

Frank was known for his tough demeanor and no-nonsense attitude, but those who knew him best understood that beneath that exterior was a soft heart and deep love for his family. He believed in working hard, standing by your word, and taking care of the people around him. He often taught by example more than words, leaving lasting lessons with those fortunate enough to know him.

He was a devoted husband, father, and mentor. His family meant everything to him, and he was proud of the life he built and the people around him. He also enjoyed cheering on Notre Dame and rarely missed a chance to follow the Fighting Irish.

Franklin is survived by his sons, Tom Smith and Robert Smith; Robert’s wife, Lisa Walorski-Smith; and his sister, Christine Esarey.

He is reunited in peace with his beloved wife, Darla Smith, and with his parents, Virginia and James Smith.

Franklin will be remembered for his strength, his quiet kindness, and the legacy he leaves through his family and the many lives he influenced.

Cremation has taken place with a time to celebrate his life scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 11 – 1pm, with a brief service beginning at 1pm at Cruz Family Funeral Home, Osceola. Following the service, Frank’s urn will be placed next to Darla at Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to Pregnancy Helpline of Three Rivers, Michigan. To light a virtual candle, share a story of Frank’s life, or extend a message of comfort to his family, please visit the Guestbook.
