February 14, 1955— March 13, 2026
Staten Island, NY
Francis Thomas Whalen, aged 71, passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Francis Sr. and Florence Whalen, he attended St. Jerome’s grammar school and Power Memorial High School. He worked at Chase Bank before entering the NYC Police Academy in 1982, the same year he married his wife, Patricia. He served with distinction for twenty-two years, rising to the rank of Sergeant in 1989 before retiring in 2004.
Known affectionately as Frank, Fran, Husband, Dad, Pop-pop, Favorite brother-in-law, Uncle, and Friend, he lived a life defined by compassion and quiet generosity. As Frank, he delivered Meals on Wheels with patience and warmth, always taking time to sit and listen to the elderly recipients who simply needed someone to talk to. He was the first to offer help or a steady hand to anyone in need.
As Fran, he was a devoted husband to Patricia for forty-three years, raising three successful and beautiful daughters together. As Dad, he remained a constant, protective presence in the lives of Kristen (and her husband Bobby), Colleen, and Kerri (and her husband Matthew), believing his girls would always need him. As Pop-pop, he took immense pride in his grandchildren: Connor and Carter, and later his cherished granddaughter Charlotte, whom he lovingly called Charli.
He was dearly loved as favorite brother-in-law by Patricia’s sister Lilias and her husband Billy and Pat Barry, and as Uncle Frank to his four nieces, Brittani, Ashley, Erin, and Keriann. To know Frank was to love him; his friendships, formed in childhood and throughout his life, remained deep and enduring, many of them becoming lifelong bonds. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
