She was born 109 years ago in Monterey on August 3rd, 1916, in the Chinese village on Cannery Row now known as McAbee Beach. She lived in Monterey her entire life.Frances graduated from Monterey high school in 1934 and met her future husband Howard in school right after he moved here from Chicago. She didn't like him at first, but he persisted and eventually won her over. They were married July 7th, 1940, and had a happy marriage for 46 years until his death in 1986.She had a long career as a bookkeeper. She began working the National Dollar Store in Monterey for 12 years. After that she became the bookkeeper for Regal Seafood, the wholesale fish market that Howard started until the business was sold.Frances had many interests and hobbies. She loved line dancing and attended classes until she was in her 80's. Dressing up in jeans, hand-made scarves & cowboy boots was a joy for her. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. She tried to pass along her knowledge by teaching her nieces. Several friends and family members still have the colorful afghans she made for them.She met and befriended many people in her long life. Some knew her through her activities like line dancing and volunteering at Alliance on Aging. Other people met her through Howard's many business contacts. Many more knew her through various family connections. All remember her as a lively, outgoing woman full of smiles and laughter.But most of all, she was a devoted, loving wife and mother. She put her husband's and 2 children's needs above her own and tried to make their lives as happy as possible. She succeeded.Frances was preceded in death by her husband Howard, her son Richard, and siblings Alice, Tommy and Alfred. Her daughter Carol Lydon (Martin) lives in Pacific Grove.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Frances' name to the charity of the donor's choice.Visitation will be on Wednesday March 11th from 10 am to Noon at Mission Memorial Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero in Monterey. During that time everyone is invited to share feelings and stories about Frances if they wish. Interment will follow at 12:30 at San Carlos Cemetery.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
