Floripa Barbosa DePina, affectionately known to many as “Mama di Prentxinha,” passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at the remarkable age of 104. Born on February 5, 1922, in Piquinho, Fogo, Cabo Verde, she spent most of her adult life in Praia, where she built a life rooted in family, perseverance, and community. In 1998 she moved permanently to the United States, continuing to serve as a guiding presence and beloved matriarch to multiple generations of her family.
Mama di Prentxinha was known for her strong determination, iron will, and deep love for her family. She was the steadfast foundation of her household, a woman whose strength and wisdom left an indelible mark on everyone around her. She found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who filled her with pride and happiness.
In her later years she discovered much pleasure at the Adult Daycare Center, where she formed warm friendships, shared laughter, and created lasting memories with those around her. Her welcoming spirit and memorable presence made her dearly loved by many, both inside and outside her family.
She is survived by her loving family, including her two daughters, Fatuca and Lena, and her four sons, Du, Angelo, Belmiro, and Nene, along with 22 grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren. All will carry forward the legacy of love, strength, and unity she so faithfully built throughout her long life.
