Fernando Flores Jr.
August 4, 1950— March 9, 2026
Detroit, MI
Fernando Flores Jr., born on August 4, 1950, in Albion, Michigan, passed away on March 9, 2026, at the age of 75. The beloved son of Fernando Flores and Petra Guzman Flores, he lived a life rooted in hard work, deep devotion to family, and a lifelong passion for music.
Fernando shared 42 cherished years with his wife, Gloria Flores. Their love began in quiet, everyday moments when he noticed her walking her children to school near the Head Start building where he worked. What started as a glance soon became a lifelong partnership built on love, mutual support, and unwavering commitment to one another and their family.
Family remained the heart of Fernando’s world. He was a proud and devoted father to Gloria Flores-Holthus and her husband Shawn, and he embraced with equal love and guidance Venita Ana Rodriguez-Singh, Adrian Carlitos Rodriguez Jr., Dolores Parr and her husband Steve, Juan Cantu and his wife Lisa, Deborah Lee Vela and her husband Baltazar, and John Sanders. He took great pride in his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, treasuring every moment spent with them. As the second oldest of ten siblings, he shared close bonds with his surviving brothers and sisters, Linda Vasquez, Robert Flores and his wife Marian, Michael Flores, and Diane Flores. He was preceded in death by his sisters Delores Flores, Ofelia Flores-Wofford, Mary Flores, Josephine Villa, and Theresa Perez.
From childhood, when he helped his father deliver tortillas and Mexican produce throughout the community, Fernando developed a strong work ethic that guided him throughout his life. He dedicated 42 years to the Vista Nuevas and Matrix Human Services Head Start Program, beginning as a teacher and later preparing meals in the kitchen, always committed to supporting young children and their families. Music brought him profound joy; known as “Fernie” to his friends, he played drums in bands including Spectrum, The Voyage, and Mas Rock, performing throughout Detroit and the Downriver area. He later developed a deep appreciation for jazz. Fernando also loved the outdoors, finding satisfaction in landscaping, fishing, and caring for his yard through Michigan’s changing seasons. A dedicated community member, he was a charter member of the Detroit Hispanic Lions Club, generously giving his time to help local families. An avid Detroit sports fan, he remained loyal to the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons throughout his life.
