In his final moments, he took his last breath with his oldest son by his side, surrounded by love.He was born on September 18th, 1950 in Alice, Texas to Rodolfo and Olivia Valdez Cantu.Music was one of the greatest passions of Federico's life. His love for rhythm began in the late 1960s when he played several instruments in a school band called "The Untouchable Bats." The band was formed alongside fellow musicians Ruben Luera, Ruben Cardona, and Ruben Gomez, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey in music. What started as a youthful love for performing quickly grew into a passion that would stay with Federico for the rest of his life. Today, those original bandmates have all passed on, and their loved ones find comfort in imagining them reunited once again-playing together in heaven. For decades, Federico was known as a talented and dedicated drummer who brought energy, heart, and soul to every performance. Throughout the years, he shared his musical gifts with many bands and musicians, including Grupo Vida Alegre, Los Nobles, Mago, Los Estrenos de Mando Garza, René Joslin y Los Favoritos, and El Grupo Montaña, among many others. He spent countless evenings and weekends behind his drum set performing at dances, community gatherings, celebrations, and events. Music was more than a pastime for Federico-it was a way he connected with people and brought joy to those around him. The steady rhythm of his drums became a signature of his presence and a gift he shared with his community for decades.By day, Federico worked faithfully in a profession centered on people and community, always striving to serve others and provide for his family. Yet music remained a constant thread throughout his life, a passion he carried with pride and dedication.Federico was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was known for his strength, humor, generosity, and steady spirit, and for the deep love he carried for his family. As he grew older, Federico's Christian faith became an increasingly important part of his life. He leaned on his relationship with God for guidance, strength, and peace. During moments when he felt discouraged or heavy-hearted, he would often call his beloved brother, Norberto "Tucker," to share the Word of God and pray together. Those conversations brought him comfort and reflected the deep spiritual bond they shared.Federico was previously married and remained deeply committed to his role as a father throughout his life. In his later years, he was blessed with the companionship of Maria Gloria Pereida, whose presence brought comfort, friendship, and care.Above all, Federico treasured his family. He is survived by his children, Marivel (Ray) Gonzalez, Federico (Adelita) Cantu Jr., Krystal (Marcus) Cossey, and Daliana Cantu, as well as his 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 13 fur-grandchildren.
