Harold McClanahan passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14th at the age of 77. He will be remembered as a devoted son, brother, uncle, and loyal friend whose life was defined by service, compassion, and deep care for others.
Harold held a lifelong love of travel and found great joy in exploring new places and experiences. Yet nothing mattered more to him than family. He was blessed with many special friendships that enriched his life over the years, and he valued these relationships deeply. Known for his loyalty, thoughtfulness, and steady presence, Harold was someone friends and family could always count on for support, kindness, and quiet encouragement.
He dedicated his professional life to public service, serving as Director of the Department of Social Services in Buchanan County, Virginia, until his retirement. His career reflected his strong sense of responsibility and commitment to helping others. That same spirit of service continued beyond his work, as he lovingly cared for both his aunt and his mother with unwavering support, patience, and dignity.
Harold is survived by his mother, Maurene McClanahan; brother, Gary McClanahan; nieces and nephews, Lindsay Cook (Dayne), Ben McClanahan (Leah), Betsy Jones (Chip), Blake Snead (Lindsey), Dana Snead (Queen); brother-in-law, Jim Snead; sister-in-law, Linda McClanahan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ervin McClanahan; sister, Pamela Snead; and aunt, Maudene O’Flaherty.
