Ernestine Weir ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Darst Funeral Home on Mar. 6, 2026.Ernestine WeirJanuary 29, 1952 – March 5, 2026M. M. Ernestine Fortner (don't ask about the M.'s) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Margrett Anne and James Wesley Fortner. As a young child, Ernestine moved to the Los Angeles, California, area with her mother and two younger brothers, James and Otis. In 1970, Ernestine graduated from Bell Gardens High School; she was the first in her family to complete a secondary education. A gifted linguist who dreamed of becoming a nurse, Ernestine received a scholarship from the State of California to attend any of their university campuses. Ever practical, however, Ernestine decided to work full-time so that she could support herself. On April 28, 1972, Ernestine married Verne Ray Weir, a childhood friend. Verne and Ernestine lived in Downey, California, which is where they welcomed their daughters Bethany (in 1977) and Breanna (in 1978). In 1978, the Weir family relocated to Marsa El Brega, Libya, for Verne's work as an engineer. They were to spend 7 years overseas, first in Libya and later in San Nicolas, Aruba. During this time, the family traveled extensively throughout Europe and visited the Pyramids in Egypt. Verne and Ernestine also traveled to Israel. It was a challenging time, but Ernestine became a talented cook and seamstress in her efforts to provide for her family with limited resources. In 1985, Verne and Ernestine moved to Humble, Texas, where they soon completed their family with the birth of their youngest daughter, Holly.Having been baptized at 18, Ernestine was a faithful member at various Churches of Christ until her arthritis and poor health prevented regular attendance. While her health permitted, Ernestine was an active volunteer in the church. She led Bible classes and organized Vacation Bible School. Ernestine was recognized for her creativity and talent at any arts and crafts project she put her hand to, both in the church and in the Girl Scouts, where she served as a troop leader and long-time volunteer. While her girls were still at home, Ernestine earned a certificate in American Sign Language and worked briefly as an administrative assistant. However, Ernestine's main focus was raising her daughters, and she lived a life of service for those she loved. You knew if you were loved by Ernestine Weir. There were no limits to what she would do for you. In time, that fierce love grew to encompass her sons-in-law and grandchildren, who she spoiled as often as she possibly could.Ernestine is survived by her husband Verne; children Bethany and Ian Loomer, Breanna and Steven Bailey, and Holly and Joseph Spell; grandchildren Annora Bailey, Ian Bailey, and Rosalie Spell; and sisters Teresa Peacock and Joyce Dyer. She is preceded in death by her parents and both of her brothers. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
