Elvis Downs

June 21, 1934 March 11, 2026

Wichita, KS

Elvis Downs, 91, of Wichita, died at his home on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Born in Wichita on June 21, 1934, he was the youngest of five sons born to William and Luna Downs.

He served in the U.S. Army and Reserves for six years, including a deployment during the Korean conflict. Elvis married his first wife, Nellie, in the late 1950s, and together they had three sons: Bobby, Michael, and James. After transitioning to civilian life, he worked in various roles before joining the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler. There he met the love of his life, Veda. They married on September 11, 1971, and created a blended family together.

Elvis and Veda shared a deep love for road trips across the country, bowling in local leagues, and spending time at the lake with their camper. They were longtime members of Pine Island RV Park at Grand Lake in Oklahoma, where they cherished hosting loved ones, playing joker's bingo, and visiting with fellow campers. Elvis never met a stranger and was known for his storytelling and straightforward approach to life. After retiring from the Postal Service in 1992, he continued working in transportation services as a driver for Youthville, KETCH, and Envision. He faced cancer and a back injury with quiet resilience, living simply and finding joy in hard work and time spent with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Luna Downs; his wife, Veda; sons Bobby Downs and Michael Downs; stepchildren Marilyn Curless, Terry Dunsworth, Marvin Dunsworth, and Jerry Dodson; and his four brothers. Elvis is survived by his son, James Downs; daughter, Debra Turner; stepdaughter, Geanetta Renner; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and extended family members who will fondly remember his stories and his no-nonsense approach to life.
