She was the heart of our family, the one who brought comfort during difficult moments, laughter into everyday life, and a love that made everyone around her feel at home. She found joy in the simple, beautiful parts of life. Vera loved tending to her garden, where she could often be found caring for her flowers and plants with the same patience and love she gave to the people in her life. She was especially proud of her grass. She didn't let anyone touch it, because only she knew how Uncle Louis had taught her to take care of it. She also loved waking up early and heading out to garage sales, always on the lookout for her next little treasure. It didn't matter how small the find was. The joy was in the adventure and the story behind it. Her excitement when she got home and called her kids outside to show them what she had found, along with her plans for how she would use it or where it would go, is something we will always remember. Vera was a strong woman, the kind of person people naturally turned to. Everyone in the neighborhood knew her since she was a little girl. If you walked or drove by, it wasn't uncommon to hear someone call out, "Hey Ms. Vera, the yard is looking good. Do you need help with anything? I brought you some food. Do you want a Coke and a bag of chips?" Everyone knew she loved her cold can of Coke. If you were part of the neighborhood, you knew to bring both, because it was Vera. She was the light of Chapman Street and someone who made people feel welcome wherever she went. Her love for helping others extended beyond her home and neighborhood. Vera enjoyed volunteering at Lakewood Church, where she found joy in serving and giving her time to support others in her community. Her roles at the church varied within the KidsLife team. Even with a full schedule and many responsibilities, she always made time to serve. You could often find her there on Saturday nights, volunteering with a smile. The holidays were always so special to her, especially Halloween, which was her favorite. Anyone who drove by our home starting in September knew it immediately. One by one, her Halloween friends would appear across the yard, turning the house into a place that made people smile, laugh, and stop to admire the decorations she loved so much. The irony was that she was a God-fearing woman who didn't like spiritual or scary movies, yet she absolutely loved decorating her home for Halloween. She was a supportive friend, a listening ear, and someone who always made time for others. But above all else, she was an incredible mother. Her children were the center of her world, and she loved them fiercely, standing beside them through every season of life. She wanted the very best for all three of her children and always made sure they knew they could succeed in life, no matter what direction they chose to take. The space she leaves behind is immeasurable, and our hearts will never be the same. But the love she gave us does not leave with her. It lives on in every memory, every lesson she taught us, and in the way we continue to love one another. She always reminded us that we must stick together because, as she would say, "I taught y'all to love one another and not fight." Though we wish we had more time, we are forever grateful for the life she lived and the love she shared so freely. That love will stay with us always. We will carry her love with us in everything we do, honoring the life she lived, the family she built, and the families we are building ourselves with the same love and values she instilled in us.Visitation will be held Monday, March 16th, 2026 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Felix H.
