Elsie "Pete" Cox Burroughs, age 94, of Loris, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. She was the wife of the late Elroy Dale Burroughs.
Born in Tabor City, North Carolina, Elsie was the daughter of the late John Grady and Dola Fowler Cox. She worked for many years at Schild's Department Store and Ruey's Department Store in Tabor City before retiring. A longtime member of First Baptist Church in Loris, she volunteered at the Loris Extended Care Center for 27 years and taught Sunday School there. In 2007 she was recognized for her Dedicated Christian Service to the church and the care center's residents. In 2015 the City of Loris presented her with the Community Service Award in honor of her many years of dedication to the community.
Elsie was an avid gardener who took great pleasure in tending her yard and cutting her own grass. She was well known for her strawberry fig jam, which she happily shared with friends and loved ones.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elroy Dale Burroughs, a daughter, Karen Jones, and two sisters, Lena McCants and Anna Louise Long. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Muller (Barry) of North Myrtle Beach; two grandchildren, Ashley Smith (Mike) of Rochester, New York, and Clay Jones (Laura) of Johns Island, South Carolina; two great-grandchildren, Baylor Smith and Graham Jones; two step-grandchildren, Matthew Muller (Jennifer) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Andrew Muller (Leila) of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; six step-great-grandchildren, Caroline Muller, Charlie Muller, Eliza Muller, Poppy Muller, Sydney Lima, and Jack Lima; one brother, Paul Cox (Choi) of Loris; and one sister, Nina Collier of Whiteville, North Carolina.
