Elsa Nyberg Fitzgerald
April 24, 1942— March 4, 2026
Dover, NH
Elsa Nyberg Fitzgerald, 83, of Dover, New Hampshire, passed away on March 4, 2026, surrounded by her family at The Residence at Silver Square following a brief illness.
Born on April 24, 1942, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Elsa was the youngest child of the late Mary Louise Nyberg (née Campbell) and Eric Harold Nyberg. She carried deep pride in her Marblehead roots and her Prince Edward Island and Swedish heritage. A graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lynn, Massachusetts, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Boston University in 1964.
Elsa had a remarkable gift for bringing people together. She found joy in life's simplest moments, gathering family and friends around the table to share meals, stories, and laughter. Whether with cousins, nieces, nephews, siblings, grandchildren, or friends who quickly became family, she believed life was meant to be shared. At the Fitzies' home, the door was always open, because Elsa believed everyone was welcome and that relationships were life's greatest blessing. An avid reader who loved gardening, she also enjoyed skiing and sailing with her family, and found great delight in observing the birds and marine life along the Atlantic coast. Together with her husband, Arthur, their strong Catholic faith led them to help bring the Marriage Encounter movement to New England in the 1970s, strengthening marriages across the region and beyond.
Elsa enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Massachusetts Historical Commission, where she served as Assistant Director. She played a key role in the publication of the landmark 1979 preservation plan, Cultural Resources in Massachusetts: A Model for Management, which established the framework still used by the Commonwealth to identify and protect historic sites. After retiring, she continued her preservation work as a lead consultant for Preservation Massachusetts, focusing on grassroots advocacy and legislative efforts. Her dedication helped preserve important landmarks including the schooner Adventure in Gloucester, the Hall-Haskell House in Ipswich, and numerous archaeological and Indigenous sites across the Commonwealth.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Arthur Fitzgerald, Elsa is survived by her loving children: Britt Manero and her husband Stephen of Eliot, Maine; Brendan Fitzgerald and his wife Cindy of Scottsdale, Arizona; Sean Fitzgerald and his wife Mary of Newton, Massachusetts; Gregory Fitzgerald and his wife Mary of Bellevue, Washington; and Michael Fitzgerald and his wife Leila of Sedona, Arizona. She also leaves eleven adoring grandchildren—Caileigh, John, Kaitlyn, Shannon, Molly, Taylor, Ella, Finn, Jennifer, Catherine, and Marin—her sister, Jeannie Kellen of Medford, Massachusetts, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Eric Nyberg, and her sisters, Mary Louise Roche and Ann Campbell Mathers.
Elsa’s life was guided by faith, family, and a profound respect for the stories carried in people and places. She leaves behind a legacy of preservation, compassion, and enduring love.
