Indianapolis, IN
Elmo Thomas Crabtree, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 10, 2026, at the age of 91. Born and raised in rural Tennessee, Elmo carried the early lessons of hard work and the importance of a warm home and full table throughout his life. These values shaped his long career as the owner of Crabtree Heating & Air Conditioning, where he earned a reputation as a skilled craftsman who could repair anything. If he did not already know how, he would patiently figure it out.
Elmo took great pride in helping his adult children with household repairs and improvements, never expecting anything in return. He frequently assisted people who could not afford his services and often performed extra work during service calls simply to be kind. One winter night, after an emergency call, he told a struggling homeowner they owed only a couple of dollars. That quiet generosity reflected a man who never forgot what it was like to grow up with little. He dedicated his working life to ensuring others had warm homes, a fitting legacy for someone who understood the cold winters of rural Tennessee.
Beyond his work, Elmo was known for his gentle humor and his ability to put people at ease. He loved conversation, whether in person or over his CB radio, where he shared jokes from Hee Haw and turned strangers into friends. Animals were naturally drawn to his calm presence, including the squirrels that visited his door for cookies. An excellent cook, he made memorable breakfasts, and he enjoyed watching wrestling, fishing, gardening, and sharing fresh tomatoes from his garden with family, friends, and neighbors.
Above all, Elmo’s greatest joy was his family. His late wife, Betty Lou Crabtree, was the love of his life, and his devotion to her remained steadfast; he once brought her home from a nursing facility so he could care for her himself. He is survived by his son Michael (Zora) and daughters Deana (Chris), Katrina, and Kristina, as well as nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be remembered fondly by extended family and the many friends and former customers who became like family over the years. Elmo will be missed for his generous spirit, his helpful hands, and the warmth he brought to everyone around him.
