Ellen Campbell "Roy" Golden Elizabeth City - Ellen "Roy" Campbell Golden, age 83, of Elizabeth City, NC, died at her home on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Born in Norfolk, VA, on September 1, 1942, to the late Charles Walter Campbell, Jr. and Jean Hopkins Campbell, she was the wife of 60 years to Walter Bernard "Mickey" Golden III. After her father returned from the war and during her younger years, she moved with her family to Massachusetts, Richmond, VA, and finally settled in Falls Church, VA. She graduated from Falls Church High School and attended Westhampton College (now the University of Richmond) for one year before attending secretarial school and afterward became secretary to the Curator of Naval History at the Smithsonian Institution's (now) Museum of American History. She met Mickey in 1964 while taking a college French class and the rest is history. They were married on June 5, 1965, and in the fall of 1967, they moved to Williamsburg, VA, where he attended the Marshall Wythe School of Law. While in Williamsburg, Roy worked with Colonial Williamsburg as secretary to the director of marketing until 1968, when her first daughter, Kate, arrived during the spring semester law school final exams. After Mickey graduated from law school, they moved back and settled in Northern Virginia around family. Her second daughter (her mini-me) was born in the fall of 1975, and in 1976 the family settled in Falls Church. During her years in Northern Virginia while she was raising a family, she was active in The Falls Church Episcopal Church serving as chairman of the Falls Church Day School, working at the Northern Virginia Junior League (JLNV), supporting its mission to empower women. She and Mickey belonged to the Shillelagh Travel Club and enjoyed traveling with the group. In the early 1980s, the family transferred to the Church of the Holy Cross Dunn Loring, where she was a youth group leader and active in the ECW After the children were grown, she worked as a systems analyst for the federal government until she and Mickey retired to Elizabeth City. Roy continued to be busy and very involved in her Elizabeth City community. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Albemarle Museum Guild, Arts of the Albemarle, and the Historical Preservation Commission. Roy was a doting wife, mother, and grandmother, and it must be noted that she made the world's best crab cakes. In addition to her husband, Mickey, Roy is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Hayes (Rex) and Amy Copfer; a sister, Sarah "Sally" Jean Campbell (John Rybicki); a brother, Charles Walter "Pete" Campbell III (Pat Pacierb); two grandchildren, Addie and Stephen Hayes; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Cooksey, a brother, Stephen Hopkins Campbell, and a son-in-law, Jayson Copfer. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026 at Christ Episcopal Church, with interment in the memorial garden. Twiford Funeral Homes, 405 E.
