Elizabeth Vamvakas ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Southern Mississippi Funeral Services on Mar. 5, 2026.Elizabeth VamvakasOctober 10, 1940 – March 4, 2026Elizabeth Vamvakas was born in Jaffa, Palestine, into a family of eleven children. Her parents were of Greek origin, but Arabic was spoken at home and was Elizabeth's firstlanguage. After the first Arab–Israeli war (1948–1949), her family relocated to Egypt, where Elizabeth attended school. She later started her first family and was blessed with three children. In March 1988, Elizabeth married Dr. Angelos Vamvakas in Elefsina, Greece. Following an invitation from her mother-who had already obtained U.S. citizenship-they immigrated to the United States and began their life in Connecticut, where Angelos became a board-certified psychiatrist. In 2003, they moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where they lived ever since.Elizabeth was baptized as an infant at the Church of the Resurrection (the Holy Sepulcher) in Jerusalem and, like her parents, remained a devout Orthodox Christianthroughout her life. After arriving on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, she became a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Biloxi. Within this community-which over time became a spiritual home for many young people seeking the Lord-Elizabeth was deeply loved as a living connection to the roots of Orthodox Christianity in Jerusalem.Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Angelos Vamvakas; her daughters, Gianna (Genova, Italy) and Akaterina (D'Iberville, Mississippi); and her three grandchildren,Ioannes (Genova, Italy), and 4-year-old twins Adam and Sara. Her son, Bassem, who lived on the Gulf Coast, preceded her in death in 2023.Services for Elizabeth Vamvakas will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Beauvoir Road in Biloxi.
