Elizabeth C. “Betty” Spurlock, 98, of Mentone, Indiana, passed away on March 15, 2026, at Paddock Springs in Warsaw, Indiana, just days short of her 99th birthday.
Born on March 21, 1927, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to C.W. and Clara (MaGee) Halstedt, Betty married Vernon R. Spurlock Sr. on October 10, 1943, in Grand Rapids. The couple moved to Warsaw in the 1950s, where Betty spent many years in the retail business selling shoes. She served as president of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and sang in the Legion Choir when it won the State Championship in 1964.
Betty cherished her family and her faith. After moving to San Antonio, Texas, she and Vernon were active in their church, where she especially enjoyed Bible study groups and was known for her beloved apple cake. In her later years she was a member of the First Christian Church of Warsaw. She found joy in league bowling, collecting elephants, and creating ceramics. Her hand-painted nativity set, displayed each year at Paddock Springs, brought delight to staff and residents alike. There she was affectionately known as Peanut, Grandma, and Betty Boop—her favorite childhood cartoon character.
She is survived by her daughter Kris Pletcher of Etna Green, Indiana; her son Vernon “Mike” Spurlock Jr. and his wife Linda of San Antonio, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, her daughter Robin Spurlock Briggs, her son William and his wife Rosemary Spurlock, her parents, her brother William and his wife Stella Halstedt, her son-in-law Chuck Pletcher, her grandson Dennis Pletcher, and her great-grandson Johnny Yungandreas.
