John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains on Mar. 16, 2026.Elizabeth "Bettie" Verhasselt (Ahart) of Wayne, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12th 2026 surrounded by her immediate family.Born in Paterson, NJ, Elizabeth was a graduate of Eastside High School in Paterson, NJ. While at Eastside, Elizabeth met the love of her life Robert "Bob" Verhasselt. Bob and Bettie married in 1951 and went on to have two sons, Robert (1954) and Craig (1955). For a short time, Bettie was an employee of Paterson Catholic High School serving as a lunch aide prior to becoming a full time home maker. Elizabeth loved traveling to New Hampshire, going down the shore, and spending time with family and the love of her life Bob. She also greatly enjoyed baking and shopping, which included several weekly trips to Kohls, where she never managed to pay full price for anything always having a steady supply of Kohls Cash on hand.Elizabeth is predeceased by her loving husband Bob of 72 years. She is survived by her two sons Robert and his wife Diane, and Craig and his wife Patti. She is also survived by her four grandchildren; Bryan and his wife SueAnne, Danielle and her husband RJ, James, Eric and his wife Christine. Additionally, Elizabeth is survived by her ten Great Grandchildren; Taylor, Kayla, Joey, Gianna, Emma, Michael, Gabby, Owen, Joel, and Miles.Friends may visit at Scanlan's Funeral Home located at 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pequannock, NJ on Monday, March 23rd from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM.Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 24th at Our Lady of Consolation, 1799 Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne, NJ., followed by Burial at Calvary Cemetery, 5 McLean Boulevard, Paterson, NJ.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
