Edith V. Martin

Edith V. Martin

Berwick, PA

Edith V. Martin, 81, of Briar Creek Township, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Born in Prospect Park, New Jersey, on October 26, 1944, she was the daughter of the late William and Lena (Raap) Vanderveen. After graduating from Washington High School in New Jersey, Edie pursued higher education at Centenary College in Hackettstown and later at nursing school in Glens Falls, New York. In 1963, she married the love of her life, Wayne J. Martin. Together they shared more than six decades of marriage and raised their family in a warm and welcoming home in New Jersey, where neighborhood children affectionately called her “Squeeze” for the generous hugs she offered along with meals.

Edie worked as a registered nurse in Newton, New Jersey, and later as a home health nurse for many years. She also served as assistant postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service near the family home in Changewater. Upon moving to Pennsylvania twenty years ago, she became an active member of Ebenezer Faith Bible Church, where she found joy serving in the nursery. Raised on a dairy farm, she remained deeply connected to those roots. As a young woman she participated in 4-H, showing sheep, and later maintained a small family farm where she raised sheep, chickens, and beef cattle. She took pride in her orchard and garden, harvesting apples and vegetables that she preserved and canned with care. Edie was known for her cooking and baking, especially her apple pies, cookies, and meatloaf. She had a lifelong love of animals and was a dedicated breeder of Golden Retrievers for many years. Above all, her greatest joy was her family.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne J. Martin; son, Carl B. Martin; grandson, Erik J. Martin; and her brother, Peter Vanderveen. In addition to her parents, Edie was preceded in death by her son, Peter J. Martin; daughter-in-law, Sharon Martin; and siblings John, Albertina “Skip,” and George.
