Edith Gray, born on December 9, 1928, in Jonesboro, Indiana, to the late Harley and Myrtle (Mills) Dunn, defied the doctor’s early fears for her fragile health and grew into a spirited tomboy. She fearlessly jumped from the hayloft, rode plow horses, and cherished the farm dogs and cats. Her determination shone early when she won a box of chocolates at her first roller rink visit and insisted on skating over to claim it herself. A graduate of Fairmount High School, Edith played upright bass in a trio with her sisters, later purchased a ’57 Chevy, and carried the same vibrant pluck that matched her iconic strawberry-blond hair.
On October 27, 1957, in Marion, Indiana, she married Carl Gray. Together they ran a business in which Edith served as bookkeeper and secretary. The couple shared 44 years of marriage until Carl’s passing on June 15, 2002.
Edith is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Keith Morefield of Columbus, Ohio, and her two grandchildren, Kaitlynn Morefield and Tyler Morefield. She lovingly passed on to them her passions for dance, music, and the joy of reading.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her four siblings, Eldo Dunn, Edna Dunn, Doris Rogers, and Fern Saunders. Throughout life’s challenges, Edith drew strength from a deep faith nurtured at Covenant Community Church in Coldwater. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
