Earl W. "Butch" Carter III

Earl W. “Butch” Carter III passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2026, in Port Charlotte, Florida, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on February 15, 1950, in Rome, New York, Butch was the proud son of Earl W. Carter Jr. and Caroline Westcott. He carried not only his father’s name, but a legacy, one that continued through the generations. As Earl III, he took great pride in the tradition of the “Earls,” a name now carried on by his son, grandson, and great grandson, His legacy is not only in a name, but in the strength, dedication, and love for family that defined his life.

Butch proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was a Vietnam veteran. His service during the Vietnam War shaped his discipline, loyalty, and lifelong respect for his fellow veterans. He went on to dedicate 35 years of service to the State of New York, working in mental health facilities within the prison system until his retirement in 2006. His work ethic and quiet strength left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.

After retiring, Butch made his home in Port Charlotte, Florida, where he enjoyed fishing, swimming, boating, and spending time with family and friends. In April of 2015, he met Audrey, and together they built a life filled with companionship, laughter, travel, and love. They were married on January 22, 2019, and shared a bond that was steady and devoted.

Above all, Butch was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Audrey; his sons, Earl W. Carter IV (Julie) and Timothy Carter; his stepchildren, Kayla (Mela) Austen (Brittany); 4 Grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 6 step grandkids. He is also survived by his four sisters and two brothers, along with many extended family members who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl W. Carter Jr. and Caroline Carter (Westcott), and by his brother, Larry.

Butch had a presence that could not be ignored, strong, opinionated, loyal, and deeply loving. He was proud of his service, proud of his family, and proud of the life he built. His legacy lives on not only in the name of the “Earls,” but in the generations who carry forward his values, his stories, and his love.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered
