February 17, 1962— March 11, 2026
Syracuse, NY
Dwayne T. Gilchrist, Sr. passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at his home in Syracuse, New York, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 17, 1962, in Syracuse, he lived all 64 years of his life in the city that shaped him, carrying its spirit in his humor, hard work, and steadfast nature.
Known to all as a jokester whose laughter filled every room, Dwayne balanced his playful side with remarkable perseverance and a stubborn determination that helped him face life’s challenges. In his youth he saw himself as both Popeye and Superman, bold and invincible. He found quiet comfort in the songs of Elvis Presley, while Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” served as his personal anthem, reflecting his free and fiery soul.
A dedicated worker, Dwayne served his country in the National Guard and later became a master roofer and skilled jack of all trades. Most recently, he brought his strong work ethic to Amazon for more than three years. Above all, he cherished his large and loving family.
He is survived by his six daughters, Becky (Joel) Wentworth, Christina Gilchrist, Amanda Gilchrist, Machlia Gilchrist, Cynthia Gilchrist, and Keyonna Ogilsbie; his five sons, Jake (Adrianna) Gilchrist, Joshua Gilchrist, Michael Gilchrist, Matthew Gilchrist, and Dwayne T. Gilchrist, Jr.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry his spirit forward. He is also survived by his father, Harold Gilchrist, Sr., three brothers, James, Bucky, and Robert Gilchrist, and two sisters, Debra Gilchrist and Patricia (Patrick) Morris. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Jeanette Daignault.
