Ortego, 64, who passed away on March 15, 2026 at home surrounded by family. Father Bill Melancon, Pastor of St. Rita Catholic Church in Catahoula, will conduct the services. Above all, Dwain cherished being with family and friends. He had a quick sense of humor and was often the life of the party. On weekends he could be found camping, cooking, watching Saints football, doing yard work, or watching his grandchildren's sporting events. He loved to travel, especially relaxing at the beach.
One of the greatest joys of Dwain’s life was being a grandfather, Poppa D. He loved every moment spent rocking them, riding them on the tractor, or just spoiling them. They put a big smile on his face just being around them.
Dwain was employed by Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center for 34 years, first as a CT tech and then as Director of Radiology. He was called to serve others and did it with an open heart. His door was always open to his employees. One team member expressed, “Highest praises and appreciation for the utmost, without a doubt, best leader I have encountered in my professional career. Thank you for caring for your work family so genuinely. We have all felt seen, heard, and cared for by a remarkable Boss”.
Dwain is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Ortego of Ville Platte; one daughter, Meagan Frederick and her husband Tyler of Lafayette; three sons, Spencer Ortego and his wife Heather of Youngsville, Nicholas Ortego and his wife Amanda of Broussard, and Taylor Ortego and his wife Lindsay of Jupiter, FL; two sisters, Genie Kruszynsky and her husband Mitch, and Karen Vidrine and her husband Clarence; one brother, Charles Ortego and his wife Loretta; one sister-in-law, Karen Ortego; and eight grandchildren, Asher Ortego, Sloane Ortego, Sawyer Ortego, Rory Ortego, Pete Ortego, Liam Ortego, Austin Frederick, and Beckham Frederick.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Van Ortego; one sister, Libby Guillory; two brothers, Benny Ortego and Craig Ortego; his mother-in-law, Ada Ortego; his father-in-law, Douglas Ortego; and one brother-in-law, Kip Manuel.
Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Vidrine, Joe Guillory, Sonny Gremillion, and Jordy Gremillion.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Our Lady of Lourdes Radiology and Oncology team members, and the Gremillion family.
Dwain will be deeply missed by everyone who loved him. “Well done, good and faithful servant” Matthew 25:21.
Contributions can be made in Dwain’s memory to Our Lady of Lourdes Foundation.
