Dr. Stephen E. Jess passed away peacefully from natural causes on March 11, 2026, in Mishawaka, Indiana. Born on October 20, 1941, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he was the beloved son of the late Harvey and Agnes (Engels) Jess. A devoted husband, father, and educator, Stephen shared 24 years of loving companionship with his wife, Deborah Brumitt Jess, whom he married in Niles, Michigan, on December 29, 2001.
Stephen earned his PhD in Education and enjoyed a distinguished 44-year career as Professor of Social Science and History at Southwestern Michigan College. He was deeply committed to his students, known for his intellect, insight, and genuine care for their success. He is survived by his wife Deborah; his children Stephen (Catherine) Jess of Crosby, Texas, Kristin Jess-Seely (Jeff) of Temple, Texas, Kurt (Laurie) Jess of Bloomington, Minnesota, and Joanie Jess-Zakoor of Elkhart, Indiana; his sister Karen (Robert) Cassidy of Kingwood, Texas; seven grandchildren, Gavin, Alycia, Jessika, Rebekah, Kyla, Hannah, and Kephren; and his great-grandson, Stephen.
Outside the classroom, Stephen found joy in coin collecting, fishing, golfing, and staying connected with family and friends through social media. He approached life with curiosity and a desire to share knowledge, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him. His memory will live on in the stories, lessons, and love he so generously gave.
