Dr. Malcolm Stanley Cummings

November 6, 1931 March 9, 2026

Glen Allen, VA

Malcolm Stanley Cummings was born the third of four children to Alwyn Budd and Ruey Marie Cummings on November 6, 1931, in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania. He passed away on March 9, 2026, at the age of 94, following a short battle with an infection, peacefully in his sleep.

Known affectionately as “Doc” to so many, Malcolm grew up in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, graduating from Scottdale High School in 1949. After a year at Bethany College on a track scholarship, he transferred to Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he met his future wife, Betty Rae Campbell. There he developed a deep passion for teaching and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. The couple married on June 12, 1954, at the Gonic Baptist Church in Rochester, New Hampshire. Malcolm went on to earn a master’s degree in 1956 and a doctorate in Christian Education in 1967 from BJU.

Malcolm and his beloved wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Rae “Betty Rae” Campbell Cummings, devoted their lives to Christian ministry. They served on the mission field at the Korean Bible College in Seoul, South Korea, from 1960 to 1970, then helped establish Athens Christian School in Athens, Georgia, where Malcolm taught and served as high school principal from 1970 to 1985. He later served as Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Christian Schools from 1985 to 2007. The couple was also active at Temple Baptist Church in Athens. After retiring in 2007, they moved to Mocksville, North Carolina, to be near their daughter and son-in-law and became active members of West Haven Baptist Church. Following Betty Rae’s passing in 2010, Malcolm moved to Glen Allen, Virginia, in 2021 to live with his son and daughter-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Rae, his older sister Mary Elizabeth Cummings Whittemore and her husband Howard, his older brother Alwyn Buhl Cummings and his wife Lois Tyson Cummings, and his son-in-law Kenneth Ray Greemann. Malcolm is survived by his younger brother Robert Bradley Cummings and his wife Loretta, his son David Allen Cummings and daughter-in-law Caren Smith Cummings, his daughter Deborah Cummings Greemann, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. At his family’s encouragement, he completed his autobiography, “It Will Be Worth It All,” in 2021, and in 2023 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BJU Alumni Association. Until the end, he found joy in sending daily emails and staying in touch with friends around the world.
