Dr. John Hedley-Whyte, former Chief of Anesthesiology at Beth Israel Hospital and Professor Emeritus of Harvard Medical School, died peacefully at his home in Concord, Massachusetts, on March 11, 2026, at the age of 92, with his wife by his side.

Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, on November 25, 1933, John was the eldest son of Angus and Nancy (Nettleton) Hedley-Whyte. He attended the Dragon School in Oxford and Harrow School before studying medicine at Clare College, Cambridge University, earning his BA in 1952. He completed his clinical training at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, graduating with his MB BChir in 1958. After early house jobs, he began his specialization in anesthesia at Barts in 1959. In 1960, he and his wife sailed to the United States aboard the Maasdam, where he pursued advanced training and research in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

In 1967, John was appointed Chief of Anesthesiology at Beth Israel Hospital. Two years later, he was promoted to Professor of Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School and later named to the David S. Sheridan Professorship of Anesthesia and Respiratory Therapy. After stepping down as department chief in 1987, he devoted more than three decades to advancing international standards in anesthesiology and respiratory care, chairing numerous committees. A keen horseman, he was a longtime member of the Old North Bridge Hounds. He also belonged to The Country Club in Chestnut Hill, the Somerset Club, and the Roxbury Society for Medical Improvement.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Tessa (Waller) Hedley-Whyte; his brother, Michael Hedley-Whyte; six nephews, two nieces, six great-nieces, and ten great-nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Sarah Thompson.
